The YPG 535 is a touch sensitive instrument that features 482 dynamic, authentic voices, with 361 XGlite voices, 12 drum kits and a sound effect kit. The YPG 535 also has 106 accompaniment styles and 102 built-in songs. Music database with 100 songs-for instantly setting entire instrument to match a desired music genre.

Special two-track Easy Recording feature lets you record and save up to five of your original songs – great for composing and practice purposes. You can practice the preset Songs using these lesson functions: “Keys to Success”, “Listening, Timing, Waiting” and “Phrase Repeat.” Keys to Success helps you master a Song, whereas Listening, Timing, Waiting helps you first master the timing then playing the correct notes. Phrase Repeat lets you select and repeatedly practice a specific phrase in the Song. In the “Keys to Success” mode, you can practice individual phrase separately.

Each time you finish a specific Step, your score is shown in the display. Passing one Step (with a score of 60 or better) lets you go on to next one automatically. The package comes bundled with professional closed-cup headphones, a single braced X-style keyboard stand, and a power supply.

I started playing at 3 and was probably lucky in that my parents provided a George Steck upright. Scrolling down the list of Amazon’s best-selling pianos, this one is the first I’ve come upon (currently listed in the #42 spot) that I might consider for a child who has yet to show that a piano belongs in her future. Teachers are telling me that it’s become increasingly difficult to maintain young people’s interest on just about any instrument. Children have an image of a “rock star” in their minds and show mounting impatience toward the notion of scales, finger exercises, harmony, reading music, and daily practice. Another brand would no doubt do–as long as it has 88 keys (more important to a beginner, to my way of thinking; as a “pro” I can do perfectly well with 76 keys on the job) and weighted action (as close to that of an acoustic piano as possible). Also, it’s more of a plus to a beginner to have onboard speakers than to a pro, who will necessarily be required to plug the piano into a good amplifier for adequate volume.

Unfortunately, most of these pianos come with bells and whistles–hundreds of synthesized sounds, rhythm machines (an audible metronome would be a plus and would be sufficient), as well as USB-MIDI connections and buttons that, once the child has lost patience with learning how to play the instrument, can be pushed to make the instrument play unassisted. All of these devices are not only gratuitous but represent dangerous distractions to the child’s ability to learn how to play music let alone a piano.

I’ve tried a couple of Yamahas on the job, and the piano sound is “passable” but unexciting. (Few electric pianos are, which is probably why I’m not familiar with a single major professional pianist who has performed or recorded using a digital piano).
